چکیده

Poisson (1924) states that the eggs of aquatic Hemiptera increase in volume as they develop. Kerenski (1930), Ludwig (1932), Evans (1933), Johnson (1937), Roonwal (1936), and Birch & Andrewartha (1942), all have described in various insects the changes which take place in the developing egg and which are generally associated with the absorption of water. The eggs of Corixidae are aquatic and are normally in contact with water throughout their life. Poisson regards salinity of the external medium as an important factor affecting the distribution of adult aquatic Hemiptera. Corixa punctata Illig. is a species which occurs normally in fresh water, but is sometimes found associated with typically euryhaline species in brackish water. It was thought that factors such as salinity and temperature, which might affect the uptake of water by the egg, might influence significantly the distribution of the species. Experiments were carried out, therefore, to investigate the changes in water uptake by the eggs of C. punctata under various conditions of temperature and salinity. The nomenclature adopted in this paper is that given by China (1943).

Checklist of water bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Nepomorpha, Gerromorpha) of Slovakia.

The water bugs represent a significant component of the freshwater biota, play an important role in trophic webs, and may have considerable economic importance. Nevertheless, systematic research of this group has been underdeveloped in Slovakia (central Europe) for decades. This work presents a list of water bug species of Slovakia based on an exhaustive review of the literature (time span: 180...

Biophysical properties of photoreceptors in Corixa punctata facilitate diurnal life-style

Measurement of evolutionary adaptations of a visual system to its visual and operational ecology requires comparison of visual function in different species with similar morphologies and visual ecologies, occupying the same habitats but displaying differences in visually-guided behavior. The goal here was to document the biophysical properties of photoreceptors in the lesser water boatman Corix...

Description of the Immature Stages of Sigara (Aphelosigara) tucma

Descriptions of the last three nymphal instars of the water boatman Sigara (Aphelosigara) tucma Bachmann (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Corixidae) are provided, for the first time, for specimens collected in northern Argentina; the egg is redescribed. Adults and nymphs were collected in the field. The eggs were obtained by dissection from females. The immature stages were fixed for microscopic examin...

Achiasmate male meiosis in two Cymatia species (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Corixidae)

The karyotype and male meiosis, with a particular focus on the presence or absence of chiasmata between the homologs, were studied in the water boatman species Cymatia rogenhoferi (Fieber) and Cymatia coleoptrata (Fabricius) (Corixidae, Cymatiainae). It is shown that the species have 2n = 33 (28A+2m+X1X2Y) and 2n = 24 (20A+2m+XY) respectively, post-reduction of sex chromosomes, and achiasmate m...
